What I really wanted to do was to start a discussion. The Modern Apprentice has lots of stuff listed for first aid kit. Some of it seems more for the human part of the team. I want to discuss, share, argue only about the raptor part of the first aid kit. I have lots of resources telling me what. I want to talk about why and learning and sharing what works. I could carry a 40lb first aid kit into the field. But if the only thing I can do on a rainy Scottish moor is splint and sock the bird to immobilize it then I don't need to carry all the other stuff.
Neosporin: Contrains petrolium products. From my training with reptiles, petrolium and reptiles don't mix (learned when learning to sex snakes). From discussions petrolium and birds don't mix. Why is neosporing on the first aid list. Would you put vasoline on your bird?

When one of my Rts got a bit of bumble foot the vet gave me some stuff to put on along with neosporin like stuff and daily soakings in Epsom salt which worked very well, birds are a lot different then reptiles, though they are much closer than mammals are. I'm thinking being warm blooded or some other factor would cause it to have or not have an effect.
My soul is sick of chicken soup, it wants some chocolate!
It's a type of hoof ointment, but I've been studying diseases from the modern apprentice, as I have not yet taken the test, and it said that Calson's would work, they also reccomeded neosporin, dial soap, and basics like that.
When the world is chaos, and all hell breaks loose, it's how you depict a painting, feel a song, and take to heart the words of a poem.
You mess with your bird, and it will mess with you.

i think the best thing t put in wounds is intracyte, its a hydroactive gel that encourages the formation of granulation tissue. I dont know if i would carry it in a field kit but i would carry it in the general med kit. for more intensive care. at wher i'm interning its one of the personal favorites of the staff for use in deep wounds and severe bumble foot (especialy the kinds where we have to surgically open up the foot)
though i would also add silk tape of approate diameters for use in body wraps.
duct tape is wonderfull for birds that liek to pick at foot bandages.
