Attacks...
On July 31, 2003 at 7:00 pm our male golden eagle took his last breath. Possibly the oldest golden eagle in America, he was between 52-55 years of age. His cause of death, may be old age, however, many of the symptoms he exhibited can be attributed to the West Nile virus, and tests will be conducted to determine whether he succumbed to this avian scourge. He will be missed by all of us who had the opportunity to spend any time with this beautiful predator. He was included with the author Anne Price, in our new book, Raptors. Both of them started their special relationship 23 years ago. He died in her arms.
Meet this beautiful eagle in the images below.
August 8, 2003 West Nile
Virus confirmed in our golden's death.
August 13, 2003 our Swainson's
Hawk had to be euthanised as
blindness developed due to WNV.
Since July 31, our Rough-legged hawk
has succumbed and died, and one of
our great horned owls and Swainson's
hawks are also infected and under
intensive care.WNV is attacking raptors at
all types of facilities with a vengeance.

Currently, REF is field testing
a non-DEET based mosquito
repellant that the University of Florida
has tested extensively on human
subjects with results equal to or
better than DEET, but without the
associated health problems.
The active ingredient
is called Geraniol, which is extracted
from lemon grass. Stay tuned as
our trials develop. For more on these
