I have bought a pair of welders gloves that had the right and left hand gloves. So i took the right handed glove and cut it up and made jesses and anklets out of it. Dose any one no if this would be safe to put on a bird? I dont no how it was tanned. Also i made a hood out of the rest of it.
On the left handed glove i took a strip of leather from the right handed one and pop rivetitd it to the glove. I hooked a key chain ring to it so that it was like a d-ring. Will this work for a red tail?

That's a damned clever idea! You should definitely try it and let us all know how it works. Kangaroo skin seems to be the "cliche" leather amongst falconers. I've used it on performing birds that I work with, and it works. But for MY Redtail, I've used nothing but cow and pigskin, and both have worked fine. In fact, I'd say that pigskin is stronger than kangaroo.
You can assume that the welder is made of chrome tanned leather. You should be as cautious of feeding your bird on the glove as the straps around its tarsi. Does this mean not use it ? Absolutely not. Wash the glove in warm water and rinse until water runs clear... no more dye. Lay wet glove out on towel and when almost dry, wear it dry. Work it on and around each finger. Make it fit your hand. Shortens break-in time. Every piece of equipment you will make, use or think about using must be checked for soundness each and every time you use it. You check your bird's anklets and jesses every time you pick her up. Sounds like overkill until something breaks that you should have noticed. I'm not talking about a 20 min. shakedown, just get used to looking things over. Watch the leather on welders. They are usually made of split leather and aren't that tear resistant. Important thing is you are thinking one step ahead ! Good for you !
Is the "Tassle" The strip of leather i pop riverted to the glove? I cant pull it off and the key chain ring is really storng. as for the jesses i can not brake them either
I did exactly the same thing as you with the glove, make a tassle and attatch a key-ring thingy, and not it looks wicked. I wouldn't trust the leather for jesses, especially as mews jesses, as the leather of my glove wasn't nearly as strong as the bought stuff, you might get away with it as field jesses though. Mine stretched quite a bit too, so check against that. Get some strong leather for mews jesses, especially if your bird bates alot.
When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze
leather is like wood.. it has a grain. if it stretches.. u cut it the wrong way when u make jesses/anklets pull the leahter NOT HARD! but with sum force. and see which stretches less.. cut it the way that doesnt stretch or stretch as much!
