YO, I'm making a box for Dusk at the moment, all I need to do now is put the handles on and do some other small bits like that. (it's got 2 handles as it's heavy as an elephant with lead boots, unfortunately couldn't find any lighter wood that was as sturdy. But it doesn't matter as I won't be carrying it long distances anyway.) I was wondering, varnish...I was a little worried about the concept of varnishing it, but my brother and mother said it would be okay when it dried. So if I leave it out for a couple of weeks afterwards, for all the fumes to go away, will it be okay? Or is there a better way of treating the wood?

I have always polyurathaned my boxes, anywhere from 3-15 coats. I usually leave it outside in a dry place for atleast a week after with the door open to air out.

Folks,
I had some plans for a light trapping box - obtained somewhere on the net - but have misplaced them. This plan calls for a venting systems that allows for air circulation but not light. If you have the link I would appreciate if you could post it.

I carry my bird untethered in the giant hood, which for me is a plastic pet porter, with coroplast on the inside that covers the vents, a 2" x 2" perch wrapped with manila rope is approx 10" in 6' off the floor.

I use alluminum angle and bathroom board Its very light wait and easy to clean for its size but I tend to over build things a bit. The alluminum needs to be tig welded which will cost a bit but well worth it and just use cheap outdoor house paint to seal the back of the board. I have been using the same box for a few years now and its been very durable. The boards are just pop rivited on with a washer on the back side. When cleaning just take the hose spray it down let it soak for a few mins. and wipe it down with a rag then spray it out tikes 10 mins. tops. again my box is big enough for a golden eagle though but I dont get any feather damage on my birds because they have enough room to move around
