I don't fly my red tail, I hunt it.
Every time I take my bird from the mew to the woods, it is, I am hunting.
The bird is getting exercise in a natural environment.
I try & give the bird & myself every opportunity to pursue quarry.
Sometimes the prime looking locations don't turn up any game but the small woods do.
Fly your bird in the " field " at every chance, it maximizes the bird's opportunity to chase quarry.
I'M FORTUNATE :-
I can cast my bird in the back yard & the wooded area behind my home has squirrel.
My quarry of choice is squirrel.
I don't have to travel to exercise my bird, even though I do.
My bird " SOLOMON " has flown at the top end:- 1070 gms this season.
I noticed what I interpreted as a minimal response whilst pursuing squirrel on the 1 occasion that I flew him at that weight.
I came home early a.m. this morning & decided to take advantage of the dry weather.
The bird weighed 1070 gms without his furniture ( bells & chaps ) as I'd removed them to clean & air a bite to the toe sustained last Thursday.
I took him to the woods & cast him, 15 mins later we had our 1st squirrel.
I hooded the bird, after he roused I put him back up.
15 mins later No. 2 was in the bag, the bird receiving a bite during the process.
I hooded him again, cleaned the wound & left him for a few minutes, it wasn't long enough as when I cast his hood, he sat on the glove looking to the ground for his squirrel.
HE took to the trees & we hunted on our way out of the woods.
It is because he is wed to the lure that i feel comfortable putting him up at this top end weight.
