I always see a large (fox-size) black squirrel at work. I'm assuming it's a dark morph (does "morph" even apply to squirrels?) fox squirrel. Anyone seen (or killed) one of these?
Dodes: I'm not in your area, we do have and seen Black ones down here in swamp area pretty often, watched one 2 weeks ago while in deer stand. I don't know the proper term for them either, sorry. I'll ask my Father in law. But they do taste just fine. wes

Hey all i know im a bit late but last season i was hunting and I saw a squirrel that looked like a red-squirrel but was the size of a fox not a fox squirrel but a fox and it ran through the trees like a squirrel! I have seen fox squirrels but it was way larger! I know it want a fox, u unloaded 5, 12 gauge shells and about 10 .22 LR. I know bad shot but i was in the middle of skinning a grey and my hands were bloody and i almost messed myself seeing a tree-rat that big!
-Wiskurz ;D
You can take my kids, take my wife, but please, please dont take my birds life!
Texas has some big Fox squirrels and I've seen some that were quite large. I been doing some research on the threatend Sherman's Fox squirrel thats native to Florida. I have seen one and it was the biggest squirrel I've ever seen. It looks nothing like the fox squirrels I'm use to seeing in Texas. I would be afraid for any sized RT that decided to take one on. They probally don't weigh as much as some of the bulkier squirrels in TX. These tend to be thinner in weight but just longer taller with a bigger head. The usally have a black mask but can be all black in color. Check out the link look how massive the head is.
Note: This squirrel is protected in Florida and is not hunted at all.
Damn! It looks like a furry tailed Nutria! So.....do they captive breed the big bastards? I would like to populate this area with them....
