If you are, you swing the rabbit out to the side of you that has the glove on it (out away from the hawk). Place your gloved hand (incase the bird gets footy) right up at the base of the ribcage and dig your thumb up and under the ribcage. Then squeeze firmly and put a lot of your weight on that arm as you pinch off the guts and slid your hand down the rabbits body. The guts pop neatly out the end, killing the rabbit and keeping the hawk from thinking you were trying to take it's meal. It'll take some practice to get it right though, took me a few rabbits!

What sky is talking about is a way of gutting rabbits. Never dispatch a bunnie like that. Properly dispatch the bunnie, step the bird off then you can proceed to gut it as you please.
Rabbits don't need the squeeze. Put your gloved hand at the base of the skull and take your other hand and grab the hind legs. Just strech the thing out. By doing this it rips the spinal coard from the base of the brain. Instant death.
Squirrles on the other hand need the squeeze. Just put your the palm of your gloved hand on the rib cage and push down untill you feel it colapse. Usaly when it colapsed the squirrel will also open it mouth letting go of anything it might be biting. Use the bony part of your hand oposite your thumb, just put it anywhere on the squirrel rib cage. On the side or right from the front it doesn't matter, just push and sqeeze till it stops moving.

Make sure you slide your finger down its under belly first to get its urine out or your mate might get rather wet before you go ahead ;D In fact do not bother and say 'Sorry about that'

i usually just grab the rabbit around the neck with one hand and by the head with the other and snatch his little head off. They pop right off very easily. if the hawks foot is in the way i usually just find a clear spot to run the bunny through with my game shears. Usually right through the head. No sharp edge on the shears for a hawk to foot. They are dull but rabitts are so easy to break through. There skulls are paper thin

I was reading on this website about dispatch spikes. you just like slip it in through the ribs into the heart and kills the thing
I have a dispatch spike which i do use but rarely. You have to get it just right and that's just behind the eyes towards the back of the head. But its tricky as if the rabbit bolts or moves you can misplace it and the rabbit suffers more plus blood spurts everywhere. If his talons completely cover the head i will use it but if i can get my hand in i just stretch the rabbits back slightly upwards.....Done.
The spike is great for nailing the carcass and is especially good for Feather for holding down. They are used quite a bit over here.

I use heavy game shears for fox squirrels, rabbits and grey squirrels die very quickly without the use of anything. Yarak
