I have an Innotek for my GSP. It has 4 levels of intensity with the same buzz sound accompanying each level. I never have to use anything higher than the lowest one, which you can't even feel, because he knows the sound. It works great, is rechargeable, has a 1/2 mile range I believe and I've had it like 5 or 6 years. Their customer service has always been helpful too.
I tried a cheaper one, but just had to buy another later. It's better to spend some money up front and get a good one.
I use the sport dog Field trainer 400 on my GSP. Works fantastic and I am about to buy another collar for the jack russel to wear. It's reasonably prices and has 1/4 mile range....I only hunt bunnies with my dogs, so I don't need the 1/2 mile plus range. Unit is rechargable and it has a small controller that hangs from your neck for easy use(highly reccomended) Unit was only $159.00 at Cabelas

Oh yea, Don't buy one that takes disposable batteries....they aren't cheap to replace! Go with the rechargable style!

I was hoping you would reply. I saw you with your dog at the meet and when I got my dog I was thinking about the one you had.

It depends on your dog also. If the dog is a big runner, then you will need the 1/2 mile or longer range. I use the Dogtra 1 mile collar with the beeper/locater that is good for 3/4 of a mile. Once the dog learns to turn with the beeper sound {or it gets a small shock}, then you don't have to use the shock anymore. My pointer is a big runner and she turns as soon as she hears the beeper. Cost was $300 and it is fully rechargeable and the collar unit is waterproof. The new pointer puppy was trained on the Tri-Tronics Classic 70XLS which has a 4 position shock and only the lowest shock is used on her. It is fully rechargable and waterproof unit on collar and I think it cost about $300. I don't know what the range is on that one.
my sponsor's dog is trained with a shock collar and my friends basenji is being trained to shock collar, they work great, as far as I have seen. I think I'll be using a shock collar when I eventually get a dog
Have used a tri-tronics to fine tune a lab on water fowl. I think it is important to remember that it is a tool, that employs all the classical training methods of repetition, reward, and avoidence of negative reinforcement. The dog needs basic obedience before introducing the collar. These collars are easily abused in the wrong hands.

Agreed! You can ruin a dog really quickly by misuseing the shock collar

I'm not a fan of shock collars. I've only seen one dog that really needed one, GSD and personally I feel he could have been handled with less electricity and more skill and patience..
I'm not coming from no where. I do tracker training with terriers... I know all about sprinters.

I am not a big fan of shockers either. My pointer was gone for 3 days with her previous owner and the first time I took her out to the field, I thought I would never get her back. She was totally out of my sight and gone for about an hour before I finally saw her. All the competitors at the field trials use shock collars on thier pointers and a lot of them use telemetry tracking collars at the same time. The collar is on the dog, but, she very rarely needs to be shocked. If I beep her and she doesn't turn, then she is mildly shocked. By mildly shocked I mean that I can hold the collar in my hand and feel just a slight tingle. Her collar has a "nick" mode and that is just a split second of tingle. Then it has a constant mode for as long as you press the button, she gets the tingle or shock. She has learned to turn with the beep and that is good for 3/4 of a mile.
I worked the 2 dogs today with the HH. I must say that if you don't think a shock collar is necessary to control a hunting dog, or if you think the dog is going to stay near you because your his buddy, you need to go out with a pointer sometime and it will change your opinion about shock collars. These dogs are such big runners and they get so excited out there that they just don't pay attention to anything but the game they are after. The dogs today were between 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile out in front of me and that is certainly out of anyones vocal range. The collar that was on the mother has a beeper that is good for 3/4 of a mile and I finally got her to turn to come back towards me. I didn't have to shock her, but, I had to give the puppy a mild tingle to get her attention. It still took me a while to get them back. I know that there are a few out there who think that a shock collar is inhumane or that all you need to train your dog is love, but, I would rather have a shock collar on my dog than to lose her out in the wild. Just my opinion.
