Actually, GSPs can be used for fur as well as feather. The issue is the type of terrain you have available. Here in the NorthEast we have a lot of heavy cover under which the rabbits hide. A GSP would have a very difficult time getting the bunnies out from under the cover. The mini-doxies and JRTs are much better for our type of conditions. Weasel is in Texas where it is much more wide open. Also, the reason I prefer a mini-doxie over a JRT is that they have a better nose and work much closer, which is handy when I'm working small fields in the industrial lots where I hunt a lot. I considered beagles, but they are wide ranging dogs and I don't want to have to chase down my dog every time he gets up a rabbit, the doxies just work much better for my situation. Finally, and this is something you have to be comfortable with, I like the factor that no rabbit is ever really "lost". With a mini-doxie or JRT if a rabbit goes to ground (down a hole) the smaller dogs will just follow it down the hole and flush it out the back door. Usually, mini-doxies are far superior in going to ground as they've been bred for this even longer than than the JRT has been around. Although, there are some fantastic little JRTs out there, It's just much much more difficult to find a good small (9 lbs or under) JRT than it is a mini-doxie (which are usually around this size). -Joe
well I stand corrected about the GSP.In NY we have alot of somwhat dense forrests and farm fields usually where i live it's mostly forrest, except for our pasture where my labrador managed to hunt down and completely devour a bunny... bones and all blood stains everywhere. lol Makes me wonder maybe she'd be good at it, now however w edont have any bunnies in our pasture which is potentially a problem, there is a hunting club that My parents are part of.However it is widely used and i would hesitate to bring a dog down there, (redneck territory) I have a neigbor with a rabbit friendy field right next to me and i am hoping i can get permission! probably going to have to find a good place for a hawk dog and myself to go hawking. There's another thing will a Mini Doxie be able to tree a squirrle? they're everywhere in my woods out back i shot two of them this winter, (saw a million but I am a terrible aim lol)
best wishes from Cjinx !!!!!!! ;D

They can definitely be used for that. My female Bayli will tree them and then follow them by sight from below and keep them from coming down any tree she can get to. -Joe
Great i hear squirrel stew in the future what is the use of a squirrle any point to killing one? they bite? and they make a mess specially red ones they get in our basment and chew platic lids off ketchop bottles, lol But what else can I kill my land isn't exactly rabbit friendly at least of real rabbits... ware rabbits roam the hills and eat all of the... Brusle sprouts??? anyway lol know anywhere in NY where they're are rabbits plentiful? i guess could but some and let them multiply, but that would just be mean. plus it would make alot of wholes in our pasture!
