I am at a loss i am only 13 birthday is oct 15 i live in NY and I want to get a falconry dog, should I get him/her before I turn 14 and have to wait till april for license or after I hve finished my paperwork and training, I have a Sponsor only like 20 minutes away and i live in the middle of nowhere. i consider my self luckier than god! Anyways I really can't decide wheather to get a beagle who I belieave are quite handsome, or a JRT I don't want a big dog. i already have opposition from my brother who dosn't want another dog that he has to feed (I have a chocolate labrador and shes Awsome) I would love some advice, i don;'t want my poor beagle getting eaten when he is small by my happy hawk as one member said hawks like them young and fat. i am hopping that NY state will let me take my Exam before i turn 14 so i can get my paperwork done in time for trapping season,
well best wishes from, Cjinx labeled by my sponsor to be, when three days in a row we managed to avoid all contact with Red tails who we saw everywhere!

Hunting with a lab would be fine if you decide not to get a dog. I have a Mini Doxie and vote just like JOBY. The other thing is that a Doxie might not get to the rabbit before your bird will.. JRT might.. lol
Mini-doxies are the way to go. Better nose than a JRT and won't run off like a beagle. -Joe
hehe i have a combo of botH! JRT/Beagle IS THE WAY TO GO!!!
thats what i have, hes a smart lil guy also, the lines in him are insane though, so that may be why. but it does take a season for them to fully learn and go after bunnies! mines been hunting 4 times, and has had a rabbit scent on the ground for him to follow, hes gettin there though... you can see my dogs "log" in the members dog section!
Thank you guys, I will give the lab a try shes had two litters of puppies, but runs along keeping up with our kawasaki mule, top speed! which i think is like 25-30 not to mention numerous unleashed walks. I think shes 5 and 2/3 I am very glad to receive the News that I can take the test early!!! now I can get my kick ass grade ;D he-he, and be able to get my license and my bird by at least the end of October Which would be unimaginable just a few short weeks ago. Hey I will spend some time searching goggle about Jag terriers but what are they? and are you located in NY i couldn't bring myself to ship a little pup all the way cross-country Hey Matt I heard those Beagle/Jack russle terriers are really great, they don't bark like a Beagle thank god; and have a beaglish nose! MINI-doxie seems like a good idea. they are so cute!!!!, I dont think the snow is a problem thanks to global warming! it's january raining and breaking tempeture records, next thing you know were gonna get harris hawks, which I don't think would be to bad cause they are supposed to be mellow and catch the versile game of a RT. anyways you can probably see I am still open to suggestions but i also might have to heed Dodes advice, I am homeschooled so I have more of a fllexible schedule time than most kids and I think I could handle a dog along with a bird but that's my opinion i havn't tried it so maybe i will go with the lab, unless you can convince me otherwise!!!!
THIS is really off topic a technical question how do I put my falconry... for lack of a better term, rank, and how do i place a avatar?

I've only got mini-doxies. Personally, I prefer them to JRT's, they're less high strung except when out in the field. Plus, they enjoye the down time with you as well. They're as at home laying next to you on the couch as busting bunnies when in the field. Terriers are always "on" and moving. I don't know if Hawkstir or still has pups left or not. If not, PM me and I'll give you the name of a couple of breeders who I know have litters available. Otherwise, I'll be breeding my female, Bayli this spring and will have some pups available sometime in mid summer. -Joe
Jagdterriers are not good choice if you have no hunting experience and they are not even for all the hunters out there.Too much hunting drive in a small dog.I am in Ontario.
thanks for the INfo goran and joby i just PMed Hawkstir about his MINI doxies well i should say he PMED me!!!

Since everyone is sticking to a few breeds, I will offer my opinion. I have been a JRT person for many years, but I recently bought a German Short haired pointer and it is the best dog I have ever had. 14 weeks old and he does not need a leash, already flushing bunnies under my Harris and he is the smartest/fastest learner I have seen. He sits, heels and stays already with little training needed. He has already begun pointing too. I am training him to point, but it is tough with a JRT in the house too.
