Ferrets can get very very tame, and loyal. they listen extremly well. and can do alot of things. VERY smart animals. it just is a matter of knowing what ur doing
and to flush the prey, they usualy go down into the rabbit burrows and the rabbits get scared and run out through the other hole, and BAM hawk gets em
ferrets are as smart as small primates, but about 100000000000000(you catch my drift)% mischevious as all animals. My ferrets have... how shall I say... "selective" hearing. They decide what they want to do, when you tell them no, they feign stupidity and continue what they are doing lol
I have limited knowledge about ferreting, but thought I'd exercise it anyway lol... You can use any colour ferrets, just as long as you get the hawk used to them by the usual acclimatising method that you use to get them used to dogs and cats and children etc...it's useful to put tracking collars on ferrets, because sometimes they get lost or have fun down in the warren and they don't wanna come out again. You have to dig them out in that case. You can also get a situation where a ferret will catch a rabbit while it's down there, and gorge itself. Usually happens when there's baby rabbits around. Well, that's me exhausted lol. Didn't know it was illegal in US, can't imagine why if they'll let you use bagged quarry they should let you use ferrets. But hey...it's a funny old world. ^^
Well morgan that's wrong, but I'll grant you it's easier to establigh an association
You don't train ferret's to go down holes, they do it for the sake of it, you just need to train them to be tame
When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze
do you ever lose them, or do they respond to voice commands like a dog? (I'm looking into ferrets, cause my parents aren't too keen on another dog, the last one didn't go very well)
"Men are less hesitant about harming someone who makes himself loved than one who makes himself feared because love is held together by a chain of obligation which, since men are wretched creatures, is broken on every occasion in which their own interests are concerned; but fear is sustained by dread of punishment which will never abandon you."

Ethics make the individual, not the other way around.
I’m not sure about the legality of using ferrets in the states but I think it’s legal in Scotland. I recently watched the video “Battles on the High Ground” where they used ferrets to flush the rabbits in Scotland. A few of them were white but there were also some tan ones. Looks like you just try to coax them out of the whole with some kissing noises and/or food.
Aren't ferrets illegal in California? I was pretty sure they were when I moved from there last year. I agree though, I don't think it would be too easy to train a ferret for falconry. I have a friend in England who says that people lose theres there all the time. They have ferret rescues there are so many that run off.
