has anyone ever used a weimaraner for hunting? i know that they are great hunting dogs and would be good for flushing out the bunnies for the chase, but i dont know how well they would work for hawking.
They are a little big for rabbit hunting IMHO and i think that their coat would get torn up since it is so small. I could be wrong though. From my experiance and from what i have heard, small dogs work best becuase they can squeeze into tight spots get the bunny's out so you dont have to.

thanks falcon boy. i know that people hunt with labs and gsp's. a weimaraner could be used in a similar way i think. they have avery good nose on themn. as for the coat isssue i was actually thinking of the longhaired variety of weimaraner. a shorthair would definately get more that a few cuts and snags.
Ive never seen a longhaired one, but maybe on birds they would do better? You mentioned GSP's which are used for upland game, you are right a weimeriner [sp?] might do well at finding pheasents and such.

weimareiners are excellent hunters. A little more difficult to train than your average lab variety. They are extremely smart animals and they know it. If you get one, I would recommend getting it from a breeder that focuses on hunting and start it early. There are tons of books on this breed and hunting them. Older dogs (1+) will have their own "way of life"...
I don't believe there is any long-haired variety, but you would be surprised at how tough their coat is. They'll crash into brush with the best of 'em...

Jawnny
There is a long haired variety, just not common and not seen at AKC shows.
