Well after a lot of thought I went and bought a beagle puppy. I hope he becomes a good rabbit hunter. Also my sister has a brittany spaniel setter mix that I can train for flying falcons in the future. She is about a year and half and will point birds.
This is real old, after a certain number of days inactive, the post renews as "new"
ahh... If only there was a place on the forum where we could put real old threads and lock em so that they do not bother us anymore.. ( puts pinky up to face like dr.evil )
Actually, i can get all of the $1,500 hunting dogs you want! They're easy to find. But just you try to find a pup to start from scratch with... There's the real trick!
My "pound puppy" GSP is strictly a bird dog. He goes nuts over birds but he doesn't care about rabbits or squirrels and that's what bird dogs are supposed to do. My delima is that i'm going to be flying RTs at squirrels and rabbits, too. I need a good dag to help me flush them. I've been researching things and i'm looking at dachsies and beagles. Beagles are all sinus cavity and no brain. Dachsies are small but i hear that they are excellent rabbit dogs. My sponsor and i hunt in an area where rabbits are plentiful. He said that there was enough scent their to confuse a beagle. However, near my home, the rabbits are quite that plentiful. So the dog would work well for the fields near my house, but not near St Louis. (his opinion). FB recommends the dachsie. I'm unsure.

Why not make an archive section and move em there? (I was wondering why threads I thought I read kept showing up as new... )
I suppose it doesn't really matter that my dog won't hunt rabbits b/c my hawk hates the dog! The dog ran into the mews the second day i had Zach's bird and it got footed... but good. So the dog is scared of the birds. I haven't made a concerted effort to desensitize the hawk since the dog will most probably not go hunting with us. But that isn't something that i'm willing to live with forever. I'll start desensitizing Both of them this weekend. Buzz may not hunt over this dog, but eventually she will hunt over some canine or another. Might as well get started now.
